Growing Readers

Regional Educational Service Agency (RESA) Growing Readers is a K-3 literacy professional learning grant administered through the Governor’s Office of Student Achievement (GOSA) and the Georgia Department of Education (GaDOE). The program aims to provide consistent and high-quality professional learning to teachers on effective reading instruction to help more children read at grade level by the end of third grade. Growing Readers is part of GOSA’s goal to invest in universal RESA initiatives that ensure all regions in Georgia are receiving access to high-quality, replicable professional learning in reading instruction. 

All of Georgia’s 16 RESAs identified at least one reading specialist to provide professional learning to three to five schools—eight teachers per school, two teacher per grade level (K-3rd)—in his/her RESA. Growing Readers has Download this pdf file.38 Certified Growing Readers Specialists working with 85 schools in all 16 RESAs. The goal of Growing Readers is to provide consistent, statewide, high-quality professional learning to teachers to improve student achievement. The 2019-2020 school year began the third iteration of Growing Readers. Starting during the 2019-2020 school year, Growing Readers implemented the Growing Readers State Certification Project. The Growing Readers State Certification Project adds to Growing Readers’ existing impact by reaching more schools and training a sustainable cohort of Growing Readers certified specialists at the district and school level. By adding these candidates, Growing Readers will impact approximately 85 schools, 600 teachers, and 12,000 students during the 2019-2021 school year.
